My backpacking trip around north Morocco in 1997 was enjoyable and fairly uneventful. The one sadly memorable thing that happened while I was there was the death of Princess Diana. I attended a memorial service at St Andrews Church in Tangier and watched the funeral procession in a crowded Algecira bar on my way home via Spain. Most people remember how they heard of Diana’s death. I was told by a carpet seller who got things a little mixed up telling me “the Queen’s wife is dead”. At first I assumed he meant the Queen Mother but later learned the tragic truth.
